About Monrovia / New Market, Maryland:
Take a step back in time and visit the “Antiques Capital of Maryland”. New Market’s Main Street, also known as “National Pike” was built circa 1818 and was the route most travelled by conestoga wagons from the east with cargos of grain, tobacco, lumber, furs and many other products on their way to the western frontier. New Market was a convenient stop for travelers with food and lodging, many of the original structures still stand today. In 1975, New Market was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, downtown New Market is lined with many small shops specializing in the sale of antiques. While antiques tourism occurs year round, New Market holds two annual festivals that highlight the town's historic past. The "New Market Days" festival is held annually in September."Christmas in New Market" is held in early December every year as well. Both festivals celebrate the traditional life of 18th and 19th century residents. Folks also drive from miles around to enjoy a wonderful meal at “Mealey’s”, a fine dining establishment with colonial period décor and located on Main Street.
Monrovia, a small unincorporated town next to New Market, is believed to have been named after President James Monroe.
