Greenbrier River Trail enables bikers and hikers to capture the mountaineering spirit as they wind through enchanting hills and valleys. Seek the comforting and supposed curative hot waters of Berkeley Springs.
Berkeley County is the second oldest county in West Virginia. Created in 1772 from the northern third of Frederick County Virginia and named for Norbourne Berkeley, (Baron Boutetort) Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770.
Martinsburg, the county seat, was founded in 1778, by General Adam Stephen who named it in honor of Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, a nephew of Lord Fairfax. It was incorporated by act of the legislature March 30, 1868. New industries locating here, teamed with established industries, indicate that Martinsburg-Berkeley County area is on the threshold of its greatest era.
Martinsburg is situated along the old Cumberland Trail which was a major route during the 1700s and 1800s to points west and changed hands several times during the Civil War. Harpers Ferry, which is famous for John Brown's attempted taking of the Federal Arsenal, lies only minutes from Martinsburg.
